Moss damage

Though the immediate work in your garden is likely to have ceased for the remainder of the year, there are a few things to keep in mind in the run up to next years season. After all, any prep work you do now will pay off later on, so it makes good sense. One such thing to keep in mind is controlling the presence of moss on you lawn, especially as we enter a time of year where conditions are ripe for moss to grow. If over the coming months you begin to notice moss forming on your lawn then it would be worth your while considering the following.

  • Is your lawn shaded from the sun?

  • Is your lawn susceptible to clogging with water, and/or drains improperly

  • Is your lawn weak and lacking nutrition?

If the answer to any of these is 'Yes' then it could explain why your garden is looking particularly mossy. If you want to tackle the problem head on in the new year then I would strongly recommend the following:

  • Aerate and top dress the lawn to improve on poor drainage and reduce soil compaction

  • Cut back foliage and reorder the garden to improve the level of sunlight reaching the lawn

  • Set up a proper feeding and watering regime with a view to sticking to it!

  • When mowing the lawn, don't set the cutting height too low to avoid causing damage to the root of the plant
